Honda Reportedly Exploring Crosstour 2.0 with Hybrid Power

Reports say Accord-based hybrid utility vehicle would combine sedan underpinnings with crossover-inspired practicality as Honda expands its electrified lineup.

  • Honda reportedly targets 2029 launch for Accord-based lifted hybrid utility vehicle.

  • Subaru Outback buyer migration highlights a market opportunity for Honda.

  • New model would support Honda’s long-term expansion of hybrid-only vehicles.

In typical Honda fashion, the Japanese automaker was ahead of its time with a product which, in its era, was essentially a flop. In this instance, Honda is reportedly studying the return of the Crosstour, originally launched back in 2010, an Accord-based utility vehicle. As with last time, it is designed to bridge the gap between traditional sedans and compact crossovers.

The proposed new vehicle would retain the Accord’s passenger-car platform while adding increased ground clearance, a rear liftgate, larger wheels, and suspension revisions intended to deliver greater cargo flexibility and a higher driving position. Both the sedan and the lifted variant are expected to use Honda’s next-generation hybrid powertrain.

A New Honda Ridgeline Will Arrive Within Two Years

Honda has not confirmed the reported program. A company spokesperson declined to comment on future product plans.

The concept reflects several things. One, Honda’s vision is ahead of the market. Two, consumers are looking for alternatives to SUVs and habitual CUVs. Three, the new Outback has left room for an actual wagon-like utility vehicle in the market.

According to Edmunds, the Subaru Outback has consistently ranked among the leading vehicles purchased by former Honda owners since 2020. Honda lacks a direct competitor in that segment, making a raised Accord derivative, aka Crosstour 2.0, a potential way to retain customers who want additional utility while remaining in the brand, or perhaps tempt Outback owners away from the latest 7th-generation vehicle.

Analysts also believe the vehicle could attract buyers transitioning away from conventional sedans. AutoForecast Solutions Vice President of Global Vehicle Forecasting Sam Fiorani said sales of such a model could eventually surpass those of the traditional Accord sedan as consumer preferences continue moving toward utility-oriented vehicles.

Market conditions have changed considerably since the Crosstour was cancelled in 2015. AutoPacific CEO Ed Kim noted that car-based crossover designs have become more widely accepted, with products such as the Toyota Crown Signia demonstrating growing consumer acceptance of lower-profile utility vehicles.

Honda Reportedly Plans to Bring Back the Element as a Hybrid in 2029

The reported Accord utility model also aligns with Honda’s growing hybrid plans. The automaker plans to introduce 15 hybrid models globally by 2030, while several core North American nameplates, including the Accord, CR-V, Pilot, Ridgeline, and Odyssey, are expected to transition to hybrid-only powertrains by around 2031. Honda is also developing a new hybrid V6 for larger and luxury vehicles.
