Hummer EV Nearly Went Doorless

Removable doors were on the list of Hummer EV features

  • Removable doors dropped to preserve premium feel

  • Hummer EV will offer more than 200 accessories at launch

The GMC Hummer EV pickup almost ended up with Jeep-like removable doors. A late design decision axed the idea, and the lead designer of the Hummer’s exterior explains why.

“We looked into that and this truck being premium, we felt like if you do removable doors or anything like that, it kind of would take away from the (premium) execution,” lead designer John Mack told Muscle Car and Truck.

Drivers will still get a serious open-air experience thanks to the GMC Hummer EV‘s removable Sky Panel roof pieces that can be stored in the truck’s cargo area. There will also be loads of accessories to help customise the Hummer EV for buyers.

“We’ve added a lot of things like the lightbar and the GoPro camera mount on the front hood that really enable the off-road experience in a really new way. A techy way as well, the underside cameras that can also look at the rocks you’re clearing. They take the off-road experience into a new era,” Mack said. He also said that there could be accessory flag mounts and other gadgets down the line.

More than 200 accessories total are expected when the Edition 1 truck launches, with more likely as more affordable versions of the truck enter production. And if demand is high enough, expect the aftermarket to offer a solution for Hummer owners, at least some sort of tube doors like those offered for Jeep and Bronco.
