Hybrid VW Tiguan and Atlas Hybrids Likely Coming, Long Wait Expected

Volkswagen mentions hybrid Tiguan and Atlas models are coming, but launch is years away.

  • VW Tiguan and Atlas hybrids won’t arrive until mid-cycle refreshes or next-gen redesigns.

  • Dealer pressure has shifted VW’s focus back to hybrids after earlier BEV prioritization.

  • Emissions regulations will shape the hybrid mix for North America.

Volkswagen is working on bringing hybrid versions of its Tiguan and Atlas SUVs, though these models will not arrive for several years. The information came as the 2025 Tiguan debuted ahead of the 2024 Los Angeles Auto Show without an electrified option.

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, addressed the hybrid delay during a media roundtable, noting that while hybrids are in development, they were not initially included in VW’s product plans for North America. The automaker had anticipated faster adoption of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), which shifted its priorities. However, North American dealers have been vocal about the need for hybrid models. This has prompted Volkswagen to accelerate hybrid development.

Thomas Tetzlaff, Manager of Public Relations at Volkswagen Canada, confirmed that “both vehicles’ powertrains are presently being considered for future hybridization.” He added, “No definitive timing or final decision is presently available, but it is definitely being considered.”

Andrew Savvas, Volkswagen’s North American Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, emphasized that introducing hybrids versus plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) will depend on evolving emissions regulations and fleet requirements. “What happens in terms of legislation will determine the right mix,” Savvas said.

A hybrid variant of the Atlas SUV is under consideration, with Schäfer confirming, “Yup,” when asked directly. However, any hybrid version of the Atlas will likely coincide with the launch of its next-generation model. The Atlas, originally introduced in 2018 and refreshed in 2021 and 2024, is not expected to receive a hybrid powertrain until several years later. Schäfer suggested that Volkswagen would likely focus on developing just one hybrid version—plug-in or standard—for the Atlas to ensure proper market positioning.

The Tiguan, Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S., is another high priority for electrification. While the new third-generation 2025 Tiguan arrives in North America by early summer, hybrid options will not join the lineup until at least its mid-cycle update. Currently, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Tiguan are available in other global markets, but their introduction here remains a longer-term plan.

Volkswagen’s smaller SUV, the Taos, was recently refreshed for 2025 but is not expected to receive a hybrid powertrain soon. Company executives indicated that hybrid plans are being prioritized for the Tiguan and Atlas.
