Hyundai and Genesis Range Extenders (EREV) Are Coming in 2027

• The refreshed Santa Fe will be the first model to get the new EREV technology
• Genesis will also offer a version of the powertrain
• Total driving range is expected to approach 1,000 kilometers

Hyundai is entering an entirely new powertrain segment for the brand. The South Korean automaker is well known for wanting to cover every base when it comes to powertrains, aiming to reach as many buyers as possible, whatever their needs. Hyundai already offers conventional gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models. With the extended-range EV, the lineup now covers virtually every option on the market.

Mid-Cycle Refresh for the Santa Fe

The midsize Santa Fe SUV will likely be the first vehicle in Hyundai’s lineup to get the new EREV technology. Initial deliveries are expected in the first half of 2027, coinciding with the refreshed version of this fifth-generation, best-selling SUV.

What We Don’t Know Yet

The exact technical setup hasn’t been confirmed, but in a typical EREV configuration, the gasoline engine only generates electricity to charge the battery, which in turn powers the electric motor(s) that actually drive the wheels. Given the Santa Fe’s utility-focused role, expect at least two electric motors, one per axle, meaning the SUV would keep its all-wheel-drive capability.

Hyundai confirms the battery will be developed in-house rather than sourced from an outside supplier. According to preliminary figures, capacity should land in the 35-45 kWh range. With a battery of that size, the Santa Fe EREV could deliver up to 965 kilometers of combined range on a full charge and a full tank. Hyundai estimates that’s 1.6 times the range of the gasoline-powered Santa Fe. That said, at 965 km, it’s only slightly ahead of the current Santa Fe Hybrid, which can technically reach up to 970 km.

Hyundai is promising a driving experience similar to that of a fully electric vehicle. That claim makes sense, since electric motors are what ultimately turn the wheels.

Genesis Gets EREV Power Too

Unsurprisingly, Hyundai’s luxury division will also benefit from the new technology. Genesis buyers will soon have more options beyond turbocharged and fully electric powertrains. Leading the charge is the GV80. A hybrid version, already in the works, delivers a combined output of 352 horsepower. The GV80 lineup is expected to expand further with the addition of an extended-range electric variant. For that model, Hyundai promises a high-performance battery capable of delivering more than 1,000 kilometers of range.
