Hyundai Develops Centre Side Airbag

Hyundai has developed a new airbag that will prevent vehicle occupants from hitting each other during an accident.

The new Hyundai airbag is located within the driver’s seat  and essentially pops up between the passenger and the driver. It’s like a side curtain airbag, but between the vehicle’s front occupants. The goal is to prevent both occupants from coming into contact after a collision and reducing head injuries.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, secondary damage from hitting materials inside the cockpit or coming into contact with the other passenger is about 45 percent. The new centre side airbag will reduce passengers colliding with each other by 80 percent.

Hyundai says its airbag was developed with advanced and patented technology to reduce the weight by about 500g compared to traditional airbags. The package is also smaller which gives Hyundai designers the ability to install it in various seat formats.

“The development of center side airbag goes beyond adding an additional airbag,” said Hyock In Kwon, research engineer from Crash Safety System Engineering Design Team of Hyundai Motor Group. “We will continue striving to further improve passenger safety by being ready for all kinds of accidents”.

The new Hyundai airbag is expected to debut in upcoming Hyundai vehicles shortly.

Last month, Honda unveiled a new airbag format designed to cradle the head and prevent occupants from sliding off the surface of the airbag in a diagonal collision.
