Hyundai IONIQ 5 Arrival Delayed Until Winter: Update

UPDATE: Hyundai Motor America has reached out to us confirming that the IONIQ 5 will indeed be available in North America this fall. The all-new EV will be widely available come winter.

  • Initially, it was planned for this fall.

  • The Ioniq 5 is the first of Hyundai’s new family of EVs.

  • No official reason for the setback has yet been given.

The Ioniq 5 burst onto the scene late last February and immediately caught everyone’s attention. Its design and promised performance catapulted it to the top of EVs to consider for those ready to make the switch. Initially planned to arrive in North America this fall, it looks as though interested buyers will have to wait until winter.

This is not the first time that delays plague the auspicious new EV from the Hyundai Group. Only a month after its official launch, a shortage of electric motors caused the car company some production woes. This time around, the introduction push-back isn’t explained, at least officially.

It was CarBuzz that reported this new launch date for the Ioniq 5. The different dates were spotted on Twitter with no supporting explanation. Anyone who follows the automotive industry will guess that the ongoing global microchip shortage is likely responsible for this setback.

Despite the Hyundai Group’s best efforts to navigate the shortage, it’s very possible that the setback is intentional in order for the company to concentrate on its higher-volume models such as the new Tucson, Santa Fe, Elantra, and the recently launched Santa Cruz.
