Kona N expected to get Veloster N powertrain
Now shown with aggressive body kit, wing
Hyundai has just revealed a first look at its next go-fast N model. The hot crossover hatch version of the Kona looks like it’s gearing up to be quite the barbarian, and we think it’s about time some quick budget crossovers entered the market that the hot hatches left.
The 2022 Hyundai Kona N is expected to get the 2.0L turbo-four used in the Veloster N as well as the upcoming Hyundai Elantra N models. That engine currently makes as much as 275 hp and has an N-exclusive eight-speed dual clutch box with loads of performance and fun-drive shift programs.
This is our first look at the bodywork of the 2022 Kona N, expected to be fully revealed in the next few months and go on sale this year. It’s the first time that Hyundai N division has worked with Hyundai Design Center, the automaker’s North American styling department, and it looks like the two have worked their magic all across the exterior of the Kona.
A large grille with mesh insert is flanked by large air intakes on all four sides. Even the hood gets three large inlets, likely to help manage cooling airflow through the engine bay. A red N signature line crosses the lower front spoiler as well as highlighting the rear diffuser.
Look to the top of the tailgate and there is a large double-wing that holds a new triangular third brake light. The light adds another N signature styling element, while Hyundai says the big wing adds rear downforce. Twin large-bore exhausts complete the look, and the Kona N will get body-colour fender trim instead of the grey cladding of non-N vehicles.
Hyundai says we’ll get more information soon about the Kona N, the latest in the Hyundai N performance family.
