The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is a compact car available uniquely as a four-door sedan in North America. Up until the 2020 model year, a five-door hatchback was also offered, but has since been discontinued.
There are three engine choices for the 2021 Hyundai Elantra. The sedan features a naturally aspirated 2.0L inline-four that develops 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, matched to either a six-speed manual in the base Canadian-market trim level, or a continuously variable automatic in all other trims, or what Hyundai calls its IVT (for Intelligent Variable Transmission).
The sporty Elantra N Line gets a turbocharged 1.6L four, good for 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, connected to either a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic, although the manual gearbox is reserved for the U.S. market for now. A hybrid powertrain is new for 2021, consisting of a 1.6L four, an electric motor and a six-speed automatic, producing a combined 139 horsepower and delivering fuel economy as low as 4.4 L/100 km, or as low as 58 mpg.
A high-performance 2021 Hyundai Elantra N is expected to arrive at a later date, equipped with a turbocharged 2.0L four that develops about 275 horsepower.
In the United States, the Elantra is available in SE, SEL and Limited trim levels with the 2.0L engine, in addition to the N Line. There’s also the Blue HEV and Limited HEV variants with the hybrid system. In Canada, the 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in Essential, Preferred and Ultimate trims, with a couple of option packages, in addition to the N Line, the Preferred Hybrid and the Ultimate Hybrid.
