- Since last summer, you can no longer order a new Volkswagen Golf R – dealer stocks only.
- The latest MK7 VW Golf R is one of the most universally appreciated sport compact cars.
- Remember the Spektrum Colour Program? There are some left out there.
Volkswagen introduced the MK7 Golf R in Canada for the 2016 model year. The previous MK6 Golf R was an impressive car however it was only offered in limited quantities. By comparison, no limits were ever imposed on the MK7 that is, until last summer. In a bid to shuffle allocations, Canadian dealers were instructed to buy as many Golf Rs and Golf Sportwagens as the books were going to be closed in 2020.
Many dealers, understanding full-well that Golf R is a special car, even alongside the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Veloster N, put in orders for a good number of wagons and Golf Rs. Now, if you’re shopping for one, you need to select from inventories.
At the time of writing this story, we’ve learned that there is a very even mix of the Golf R’s five standard colours. They are Iridium Grey, Lapiz Blue, Deep Black Pearl, Tornado Red and Oryx White Pearl ($450 supplement.) The exact number per colour is not known but it’s over 25 units. Whatever the number, they are going very fast.
For a while, Volkswagen Canada allowed e-Golf and Golf R access to the Spektrum Colour Program which permitted buyers to select from 40 colours. Each special shade added $2,995 to the final sticker price. And, there are some left in the country.
According to our reliable sources, here’s the breakdown of the colours still available and the number of individual cars per colour:
Viper Green (3)
Magma Orange (1)
Racing Green (1)
Copper Orange Metallic (4)
Inky Blue Pearl (1)
Star Blue Metallic (1)
Jazz Blue Pearl (1)
Champagne Metallic (1)
* Interestingly, Champagne was left off the Spektrum chart initially hence why the image is different.
If you’ve been thinking about it, stop. Get a MK7 Golf R while you can. You won’t regret it.
