Ineos Unveils the Fusilier, a Small Electric 4×4 That Takes After the Grenadier

Ineos unveils the Fusilier, a smaller electric 4x4 SUV that will offer a range extender option.

  • This new model will be built by Magna in Austria, starting in 2027.

  • A version with a gasoline range extender will also be offered.

  • The Fusilier will be smaller than the current Grenadier 4×4.

After having launched the Grenadier 4×4 and unveiled the closely related Quartermaster pickup, Ineos reveals its third model: the electric Fusilier 4×4.

Smaller than the Grenadier, this new model will share the same design theme, making it very boxy and robust-looking, with a deliberate resemblance to the previous generation of the Land Rover Defender.

This appearance should be backed up by genuine off-road capabilities too, since the company says the Fusilier will be tested on the Schöckl mountain, close to where it will be built.

Indeed, the new SUV will be manufactured in Graz, Austria by Magna-Steyr, a large automotive supplier that participated in the development of the Fusilier and also builds the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a direct competitor to the larger Ineos Grenadier.

Production is only expected to start in 2027, thus giving the automaker time to finalize details about the powertrains of this new model, which have yet to be revealed.

For now, we only know that the Fusilier will be offered with two drivetrains: a fully electric version that was announced in 2022, and a new range-extender hybrid.

According to the Chairman, Sir Jim Ratcliff, the decision to add a range extender was taken after the company realized it would be too difficult to obtain sufficient electric range with batteries alone in this model.

No details have been given about the two powertrains, but considering that the new version is called a range extender and not a hybrid, it is likely that it will feature a small gasoline engine that will never directly power the wheels through a mechanical connection.

The company did confirm that the Fusilier will be built on a dedicated skateboard platform however, and that its underbody will be made of steel while its doors and openings will use aluminum.

More details about the Ineos Fusilier are expected by the fall of 2024.
