IONIQ 5 N, Hyundai’s first all-electric N model, completes intense Nürburgring testing.
Advanced heat management and powerful braking define the high-performance EV’s racetrack capability.
World premiere at Goodwood Festival of Speed marks Hyundai N’s inaugural participation.
Hyundai Motor Company’s first all-electric N model, the IONIQ 5 N, is entering the final phase of rigorous testing on its home turf, the Nürburgring racing circuit. In a bid to substantiate the N performance principles of ‘Corner Rascal,’ ‘Racetrack Capability,’ and ‘Everyday Sportscar,’ the brand melds motorsport-bred tech and advanced software, promising an electrifying driving experience.
The IONIQ 5 N benefits from the synergy of Hyundai’s Namyang R&D Center and its European Test Center at the Nürburgring. Their long-term presence on the track enables engineers to refine durability and driving dynamics of their vehicles more effectively. Vice President and Head of N Brand & Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company, Till Wartenberg, declared that the Nürburgring is a vital ground for honing their N models and the IONIQ 5 N’s successful completion of its 10,000 km endurance test marked an important milestone.
To cope with the unique thermal demands of EVs, the IONIQ 5 N features state-of-the-art heat management techniques, including an efficient radiator packaging, enhanced motor oil cooler, battery chiller, and advanced software-based solutions like N Battery Preconditioning and N Race. These provisions allow drivers to calibrate energy consumption according to their needs, maximizing performance or endurance.
The high-performance EV also boasts powerful braking capabilities, backed by an industry-leading regenerative braking system. The hydraulic brakes complement this, featuring larger 400-mm diameter discs, made of lightweight material, and optimized airflow for cooling, resulting in longer-lasting brakes than those found in ICE vehicles.
To enhance driver feedback and control, Hyundai N engineers developed N Active Sound + and N e-Shift. N Active Sound + offers three customizable sound themes while N e-Shift simulates gearshift by controlling motor torque output, providing a driving experience that feels more like an ICE vehicle.
The IONIQ 5 N has just completed an intense 10,000 km endurance test at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and is slated for an additional 10,000 km durability test before production. With the culmination of the testing phase, Hyundai N released its third and final teaser, signaling the global debut of the IONIQ 5 N.
Hyundai N will host the world premiere of the IONIQ 5 N at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, marking the brand’s debut at this iconic event. On July 13, a dedicated Hyundai N stand will engage the public with several activities and the hydrogen-powered N Vision 74 will participate in the iconic hill climb.
