IONNA Transitions from Beta to Nationwide EV Charging Network

IONN’s website mentions “North America” many times. We’ve asked if they’re coming to Canada.

    • IONNA secures 100+ U.S. sites, expanding EV charging with over 1,000 bays by 2025.

    • New AI-powered “Just Walk Out” convenience stores to debut at select IONNA locations.

    • IONNA aims to build 30,000 charging bays nationwide over the next five years.

IONNA, a joint venture formed by eight global automakers, announced its transition from public beta to full-scale national release. Backed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, the company marked this milestone with the opening of its first IONNA Rechargery in Apex, North Carolina, and the inauguration of its new headquarters and Customer Experience Lab in Durham, North Carolina.

Since launching in February 2024, IONNA has secured contracts for over 100 charging sites across the U.S. New locations have recently opened in Houston, Texas, and Abilene, Kansas. Willcox, Arizona, and six additional sites are currently under construction. The company aims to deploy more than 1,000 charging bays by the end of 2025.

During its beta phase in late 2024, IONNA conducted over 4,400 charging sessions, supporting more than 80 unique electric vehicle models and delivering nearly 63,000 kilowatt-hours of energy. This testing phase allowed the company to refine its hardware, software, and overall customer experience ahead of its national rollout.

IONNA plans to introduce new technological features, including Amazon’s AI-powered “Just Walk Out” convenience stores, which are expected to debut at select locations in Garner, North Carolina, starting in Q1 2025. The company will also expand Plug & Charge capabilities and integrate AI-driven smart reservation systems, in-car payment options, and routing optimization tools.

Looking ahead, IONNA aims to build 30,000 charging bays over the next five years. The network is designed to support both urban and long-distance EV travel, positioning itself as one of the most integrated and driver-focused charging infrastructures.

Should we hear back from IONNA about their plans for Canada, if any, we will let you know.
