New patent hints at potential Rivian minivan
Rivian recently filed a patent on a new double-guide sliding door that could eventually end up in a minivan.
The Californian brand Rivian is best known for its electric pickup truck, the first of which was officially assembled for sale last week. The manufacturer also plans to eventually offer an SUV. Will the brand’s third model be a minivan?
A drawing of the system was discovered by members of the Rivian Owners Forum. The system is very similar to what we find on a traditional minivan, except that the rear rail is longer which increases the opening of the door.
There is no such thing as a 100% electric minivan on the market today, and with the exception of the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid and Toyota Sienna hybrid, electrification is slow to enter the segment.
Rivian’s first model, the R1T, is a 100% electric truck that was introduced long before the Tesla Cybertruck and the Ford F-150 Lightning. Rivian had therefore identified the potential of the electric truck segment and it would not be surprising if the brand attempted to repeat the feat in the minivan segment.
