Is the Next Lexus IS Going Fully Electric?

Next-generation Lexus IS is expected to debut as a dedicated EV with up to 500 hp and a 1,000 km range targets.

  • Next-generation IS expected to launch as BEV-only model in 2027.

  • Dual-motor AWD variant targets roughly 500 horsepower output.

  • Engineers aim for up to 1,000 kilometres driving range per charge.

Reports from Japan indicate the next-generation Lexus IS could abandon gasoline power entirely and relaunch as a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) around 2027. If confirmed, it would mark the most significant transformation in the model’s history. That is if we exclude the blunder that was the 2nd-gen compared to the 1st…

The upcoming IS is expected to move to a dedicated EV architecture rather than adapting an internal combustion platform. That change would allow Lexus engineers to lower the hood line, extend the wheelbase, and optimize weight distribution for performance and efficiency. Dimensionally, the new IS is expected to be slightly larger than the current model while maintaining its compact sport sedan footprint.

The redesign is reportedly influenced by the Lexus LF-ZC concept revealed in 2023. That vehicle introduced Lexus’ next-generation EV design language, featuring a low bonnet, sharp lighting signatures, and a coupe-like sedan profile.

The electric IS is expected to offer both a single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain layout. The latter could deliver roughly 500 horsepower (about 493 hp) or far more than the Lexus ES 500e’s 338 hp, placing it firmly in high-performance territory. Lexus would likely pair the AWD version with its DIRECT4 torque-distribution system, already seen in other electrified Lexus models.

Perhaps the most ambitious claim is a targeted driving range of up to 1,000 kilometres (WLTP) or 856 km EPA per charge. That figure would likely reflect optimistic testing standards, a single-motor layout, and next-generation battery chemistry currently under development within Toyota Motor Corporation’s EV program.

If achieved under real-world conditions, it would significantly exceed most current EV sedans on sale in Canada.

A major refresh of the current gasoline IS is expected in 2026, with the fully electric successor projected for 2027.

Lexus has not officially confirmed any specifications or timelines. However, these predictions line up with Toyota’s electrification strategy and its steadfastness to next-generation battery technology development.
