Japan Mobility Show: Toyota Land Cruiser FJ : Toyota, please bring it here!

Toyota expands its legendary Land Cruiser lineup with the debut of the new FJ in Japan. Perfectly aligned with the adventurous spirit of the brand, this rugged model, however, won’t be sold in North America — at least for now. Tariffs likely played a key role in that decision.

  • The Land Cruiser FJ will offer a high level of customization

  • It’s powered by a 2.7-litre 4-cylinder engine with 163 hp

  • For now, it’s not intended for the North American market

The arrival of the all-new Land Cruiser FJ enriches the family by introducing a fresh expression of freedom and driving enjoyment. Staying true to the Land Cruiser’s spirit, this model aims to make its legendary off-road experience accessible to more drivers, while preserving the core values that define it: reliability, durability, and go-anywhere capability.

Design-first approach

The exterior design of the FJ pays tribute to classic Land Cruisers while embracing a modern, functional aesthetic. Its boxy silhouette highlights cabin space and cargo versatility, two pillars of the Land Cruiser DNA. The rectangular body, softened by chamfered edges, exudes strength and stability, further emphasized by its muscular bumpers and flared fenders.

Both front and rear bumpers are now modular and removable, meaning only the damaged sections need replacement, a clever and cost-effective solution. The round headlights nod to the past while adding a touch of nostalgia to a thoroughly contemporary design. To put its dimensions in perspective, the FJ measures 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,960 mm high, notably larger than a Jeep Renegade, which measured 4,236 mm by 1,805 mm by 1,697 mm.

Functional simplicity

Inside, Toyota focused on ergonomics and visibility, both essential for off-road driving. A horizontal dashboard helps drivers read the vehicle’s pitch and roll more easily, while intuitively placed controls reduce eye movement and make for more natural operation. Thanks to a low beltline and a lowered hood, forward visibility should be excellent, contributing to greater safety both on- and off-road.

Naturally, the FJ benefits from Toyota Safety Sense, the brand’s latest suite of active safety technologies, which includes Pre-Collision Safety and several advanced driver-assist systems designed to provide peace of mind in every situation.

The technical foundation

Underneath, the Land Cruiser FJ rides on a refined version of the IMV platform, renowned for its strength and versatility. It maintains generous ground clearance and approach angles worthy of the Land Cruiser name, ensuring authentic off-road capability. Its wheelbase is 270 mm shorter than the Land Cruiser 250, giving it excellent agility and a tight turning radius of just 5.5 meters. Reinforcements under the floor enhance structural rigidity and overall handling stability. As with every true Land Cruiser, the FJ underwent extensive off-road testing to meet Toyota’s strict standards of reliability, durability, and off-road performance.

Under the hood lies a 2.7-litre 4-cylinder engine (2TR-FE) producing 163 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and, of course, a selectable 4WD system.

Highly customizable

Toyota will offer a wide range of accessories and personalization options, allowing owners to tailor their vehicles to their needs. MOLLE panels will let adventurers attach outdoor gear, while additional functional and aesthetic upgrades will further accentuate the FJ’s rugged off-road personality.

A long and proud lineage

With the Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota returns to its roots while writing a new chapter in its storied history. Compact, tough, and authentic, this new member of the family is aimed at a new generation of explorers seeking freedom, fun, and absolute dependability.

First introduced in 1951 as the Toyota BJ, the Land Cruiser quickly became a symbol of endurance and exploration, the first vehicle to climb to the sixth station of Mount Fuji. Since then, it has embodied Toyota’s mission to deliver safety, reliability, and durability to drivers across the globe, under the harshest conditions imaginable.

2027 Land Cruiser FJ and other Land Cruiser

Developed and refined through decades of real-world use, the Land Cruiser remains a benchmark for confidence and off-road excellence. With more than 12.15 million units sold in over 190 countries, it continues to support the lives and livelihoods of people everywhere.

Over the years, the Land Cruiser lineup has evolved into three main families: the Station Wagon, Toyota’s technology flagship now represented by the 300 Series; the Heavy-Duty workhorse embodied by the 70 Series; and the 250 Series, launched in 2024, which marked a return to the original concept, a simple, strong, and practical vehicle built for everyday life.

Now, with the FJ, Toyota adds a new chapter, one that reconnects with its roots while inspiring the next generation to go anywhere and, true to the Land Cruiser creed, always come back.
