Jeep has revised some specifications for the Recon EV, increasing the EV’s output while lowering the driving-range figures previously associated with the model.
The Recon is now listed at 670 hp, up 20 hp from the 650-hp figure announced earlier. Torque remains at 620 lb-ft. Jeep says the electric SUV can accelerate from zero to 60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 112 mph, or about 180 km/h.
The updated numbers reinforce Jeep’s focus on performance for its first fully electric model designed specifically around off-road capability. However, the latest range estimates are lower than the 250-mile (402 km) figure previously associated with the Recon.
Range now depends on configuration. The Overland has the highest figure at 240 miles, or about 386 km. The Recon Moab is listed at 222 miles, or roughly 357 km, while another cited figure of 230 miles translates to about 370 km.
That puts the Recon’s range-performance balance into focus – it’s quite poor. Buyers selecting the more trail-oriented configurations could face shorter distances between charges, an important consideration in regions where public fast-charging infrastructure is less common away from major highways and urban centres.
Jeep has also opened a configurator for the Recon in the U.S. and Canadian markets. A fully equipped example can reach US$78,125 (pricing starts at just under CDN$88,000, reaching nearly $100,000 with options) based on available configuration pricing.
The awaited Recon arrives as Stellantis attempts to build some momentum across its North American brands. Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Fiat recorded positive sales growth in the U.S. during the first half of the year.
The Recon is to Jeep what the electric Charger was to Dodge. The company is applying an EV powertrain to a vehicle intended to maintain the brand’s off-road positioning, while the Charger was to be the first electric muscle car, but it missed the mark. Will potential buyers see the Recon as a true all-electric off-roading vehicle? Time will tell.
Pricing may certainly be an obstacle to the Recon’s ability to lay some trails in the car business. If that doesn’t do it, estimated range numbers might hurt it more than they should.
