Karma Automotive reveals its first EV, the Gyesera sedan

  • The Gyesera sedan will be followed by the production Kaveya coupe.

  • The new EV sedan is based on a platform first revealed in 2008.


The unveiling of the very first Fisker Karma took place in Detroit in 2008 at the NAIAS (North American International Auto Show). The plug-in hybrid sedan changed its name along the way, however, Fisker having to declare bankruptcy in the fall of 2013 following the collapse of its battery supplier. The story of the plug-in sedan didn’t end there, however, with the company being bought out by Chinese interests.

The Karma Revero replaced the former Fisker Karma in the plug-in hybrid camp. Although, this past weekend, at the Amelia Concours d’Elegance, Karma Automotive finally unveiled the 100% electric variant of this long and electrified sedan.

This one is called Karma Gyesera, described by its designers as a “bridge to the future”, while most the sedan’s body panels have been redesigned, apart from the rear section. The nose is a blend of Tesla and Aston Martin, with headlamps reminiscent of some of the British firm’s older models and a rounded front end like Tesla’s Model 3, for example.

The six-spoke wheels are also new. The rear bumper has been revised, as has the transparency of the rear lights. Of course, since this is an evolution of an evolution, the dashboard looks familiar from the first Fisker Karma, albeit with a larger central touchscreen.

The Karma Gyesera is the brand’s first electric car, ahead of the future Kaveya coupe which has already been unveiled in concept form. Beneath the shell lies a 120-kWh battery, offering a range of 402 km (250 miles) between charges. As for performance potential, the Gyesera is not lacking, notably because it is equipped with a rear-axle-mounted engine delivering 590 hp and 693 ft-lb of maximum torque. Acceleration times are also quite good with a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) estimated to 4.2 seconds or less, with a top speed of 135 mph (217 km/h).

It will be interesting to see whether the public will once again embark on the adventure of this Karma Gyesera, the sedan which is expected somewhere before the end of the year or early next year on our roads. But, with a price tag that will easily surpass $150,000 US dollars, this new Gyesera will remain a rarity on the market.
