Kia to produce two new EVs in Mexico

  • The site is strategic for the brand.

  • The Kia EV9 is mentioned as a possible future product for the plant.

  • No one knows what will be the next model planed for the factory.

Kia is looking to accelerate its move toward full electrification of its fleet, as are the other two Hyundai brands. Kia is already involved in the construction of another assembly plant in Nueva Leon, in northern Mexico, according to Samuel Garcia, the governor of Nueva Leon.

The Korean carmaker already produces its compact (Kia Forte) and subcompact (Kia Rio) cars there, but all indications are that the complex will be expanded in a new effort to move to electric propulsion.

In fact, the Mexican governor posted a tweet mentioning Kia will invest again in the state of Nueva Leon for the assembly of two new electron-powered models. Of course, nothing has been made official at this time, but it is safe to assume that the new EV9 SUV will be assembled there. As for the other vehicle that will come out of this plant, its identity has not been disclosed.

The location of the plant is strategic so that the two future electric models can benefit from the $7,500 federal incentive from the U.S. government if the vehicle is assembled in Mexico, the United States or Canada.

It will be interesting to follow what Kia plans to accomplish in the coming months, especially for this other model planned for the Mexican plant.

Let’s remember that the Hyundai group is aiming for an annual production of between 1.6 and 2 million vehicles per year by 2030. All these planned investments will make the Korean group the third largest producer of electric vehicles on the planet before 2030.
