The 2027 Niro arrives mid-cycle, with Kia giving it a refreshed design that aligns more closely with the rest of the lineup. However, not a single word has been said about the three powertrain options the model is currently known for.

- The Niro is currently offered with three powertrain options
The Niro has built a strong following in Quebec. As one of the most affordable electrified vehicles on the market, its success is undeniable across two generations. The first generation ran from 2017 to 2022, while the second arrived in 2023. Unsurprisingly, the model remains relevant, but following Kia’s familiar accelerated product cycle, the Niro receives a partial redesign for the 2027 model year.
Kia has just unveiled the refreshed model in South Korea. Only three images were released, but they leave little doubt about the design direction. At the front, the Niro previously stood apart from the rest of the lineup; with this refresh, it now aligns more closely with Kia’s current design language. The headlights adopt a vertical configuration similar to that of the Sorento. The bumper has also been redesigned with a cleaner, less busy look than the 2023 model.

An Evolving Silhouette
From the side, the Niro features new geometric-style wheels. The contrasting rear side panel appears to be colour-matched on the hybrid version shown. It remains to be seen in March whether this distinctive design element will return.
At the rear, the changes are equally noticeable. The taillights are simpler in design and are integrated into a black structure that also supports the rear window. The bumper is once again more restrained and regains the licence plate placement, which had previously been located on the tailgate.

Inside the Cabin
The modernization continues inside with a redesigned dashboard. While the overall layout recalls the 2023 model, the styling evolves alongside improved technology integration. Like most South Korean products, the 2027 Niro will feature a large black panel housing two 12.3-inch screens. The centre console layout remains largely unchanged, while a new two-spoke steering wheel makes its debut.

Powertrains: Status Quo?
Kia remains silent regarding the 2027 Niro’s powertrain lineup. Currently, the Niro is offered with a 1.6-litre hybrid system producing a combined output of 139 horsepower. For a more advanced step into electrification, a plug-in hybrid version delivers 180 horsepower and offers approximately 55 kilometres of electric driving range. At the top of the lineup sits the fully electric Niro EV, producing 150 kW (201 hp) to the front wheels and offering a driving range of 407 kilometres from its 64.7-kWh battery.
Unfazed by the EV2 and EV3
For now, Kia has not confirmed whether any changes are coming. All details are expected to be revealed in March at the official unveiling. One thing is certain: while many believed the Niro would disappear with the arrival of the EV2 and EV3, Kia is sticking with the model. There may not be a third generation, but this one is clearly continuing its lifecycle.
