Lamborghini’s First EV will have to Wait until 2029

  • Ferrari’s first EV is planned for next year.

  • The Lamborghini lineup is already in PHEV mode.

Lamborghini’s first electric vehicle will have to wait a little longer. The Sant’Agata, Italy-based company unveiled the Lanzador concept in 2023, a happy mix between a supercar and a crossover better suited to everyday realities.

The arrival of the production model – if the manufacturer retains the essence of what was unveiled, of course – was scheduled for 2028, but it will now have to wait another year. This was revealed by Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

Winkelmann told Automotive News that he didn’t think 2029 was too late for an electric model. He also added that the Italian brand did not believe the market would be ready in 2025 or 2026. Ferrari plans to launch its first electric vehicle in the first quarter of 2025.

The prancing-horse brand will therefore beat its Italian rival in the electric segment, unlike its adventure in the SUV category, Lamborghini, which marketed its Urus super SUV long before Maranello’s Ferrari Purosangue.

Despite this additional delay, the Italian brand has nonetheless adapted all its models to a minimum of electrification. Indeed, the V12-powered Revuelto supercar, the Urus SE SUV and the recently unveiled Temerario (with a powertrain like that of the Urus SE) are all plug-in hybrids.

Let’s not forget that Lamborghini is part of the Volkswagen group, which currently must live with a market that needs more time before going all-electric. The enthusiasm of the early years has waned in recent months, due in part to a reduction in government rebates, but also because of the price of most EVs. And that’s not counting the election of Donald Trump in Washington, who has promised to abolish credits granted to consumers who buy an electric vehicle.

In short, adding a new electric Lamborghini doesn’t seem to be a priority at the time of writing, but rest assured, 2029 is not that far away.
