Lamborghini’s Next Engine is a 10k RPM 4.0L V8

Lambo's latest will spin to the moon

Look, we’re all a little bit sad about the end of Lamborghini’s 5.2L naturally aspirated V10 engine. But the latest news about its replacement does a whole lot to take away that sadness because the new V8 will spin to five figures on the tachometer and deliver a whole lot more power than any Huracan ever could.

Lamborghini calls the new 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with flat-plane crank a clean sheet design, and it’s one heck of a design. The engine will make 789 hp between 9,000 and 9,750 rpm—that’s right, 9,750. And it will spin all the way to a 10,000 rpm redline, meaning that this Lambo should sing like no other.

While it’s easy for an engine that spins this quickly to be extremely peaky, Lamborghini insists it isn’t. To that end, peak torque of 538 lb-ft arrives at 4,000 rpm and stays flat all the way to 7,000.

If that’s not enough, Lamborghini has crammed an electric motor between the engine and the dual-clutch gearbox. The motor adds 221 lb-ft at low RPM and an extra 148 hp.

The new engine will show up in a car this year. The new model is called the Lamborghini 634, which sums up everything we know about it.
