1,000 hp from F1 tech in road car
Hypercar set for next year
As the Mercedes-AMG Project One gets closer to production, the automaker is bringing in Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton to help market the car that will bring hybrid technology from the sport to the road. The 1,000 hp hypercar is set to go on sale next year.
Lewis has just claimed his record-tying seventh F1 title, and the ad starts with him walking away from the end of the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. But instead of heading for the airport, Hamilton is taking the Project One for a spin. Because what else is he doing to do after work, right?
The Project one is set to produce more than 1,000 hp from a 1.6L V6 fitted with a single turbocharger and installed ahead of the rear axle. Based on the Mercedes-AMG F1 engines, the engine can spin to more than 11,000 rpm but will be limited to suit road-car durability needs and to work on pump gas.
With four electric motors and a plug-in hybrid battery handling the rest of the output and powering the front wheels for all-wheel drive.
“I can still hardly believe that there will soon be a hypercar with a Formula 1 engine. We won the world championship with this engine in 2015, and I was involved in its development for a long time. I was able to drive the Project One during the film work for the new campaign, and I’m very proud of the extraordinary effort Mercedes-AMG has invested in this project. This car is absolutely unique,” said Lewis Hamilton.
