Lexus Adds V8 to 472 hp IS 500 F Sport Performance

IS gets fast again

  • First IS V8 since 2014’s IS F

  • Gets RC F power but not badge, hinting at IS F to come?

Lexus made some big changes to its IS compact sports sedan last year, but the change it’s making for 2022 is even bigger. There’s a 5.0L V8 coming to the car, which Lexus is branding as the first in a new F Sport Performance lineup that will add some oomph to the Lexus line.

Under the hood of the Lexus IS 500 is that naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 making 472 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. It’s the first time that there’s been a V8 in an IS since the IS F that ran from 2007 through 2014. Adding this big mill in place of the IS 350’s 3.5L V6 has added just 5 kg to the curb weight, Lexus says, and it bellows through a quad exhaust system that Lexus says is inspired by the RC F. Which is fitting, since this seems to be the same V8 as is found in that car.

This is a rear-drive car, using the eight-speed automatic from the RWD IS 300, with Sport S and Sport S+ drive modes that can adjust engine and transmission as well as steering assist. Other changes include an adaptive suspension and Torsen limited slip differential as well as a new rear damper from Yamaha that’s meant to increase comfort while adding high-speed stability. The brakes are larger and they’ve got added cooling.

The visual changes start with the power bulge hood, 50 mm taller than other IS models with bold character lines. The front bumper and fenders have also been lengthened to house the engine. There is a new lower diffuser at the back and IS 500 models get dark chrome trim. Inside, Lexus has added other F Sport Performance badges and trimmings.

MSRP wasn’t announced for the new model, nor was fuel economy or options information. Expect those closer to the fall, when the 2022 IS 500 F Sport Performance is expected to hit dealers.
