Lexus delays EV-only goal beyond 2035, keeps hybrid and combustion models in key segments.
V8 LC 500 and IS 500 to end production in 2026 – blame electrification.
Electric supercar and hybrid/EV ES sedan scheduled for 2026 release.
Lexus, like all other automakers, is paying attention and will slow its push toward a fully electric lineup, extending the production timelines of hybrid and internal combustion engine (ICE) models beyond its previous 2035 target.
The Toyota-owned luxury brand had committed to offering an electric vehicle in each segment by 2030, with a complete transition to EV by 2035. However, that plan has been modified, allowing hybrid versions of popular nameplates such as the ES sedan to continue alongside EV variants.
Lexus Introduces Electrified 2026 ES with Hybrid and BEV Options
While Lexus will discontinue its two remaining V8 models, the LC 500 convertible (LC hybrid should continue) and IS 500 sedan, other models powered by smaller engines or hybrid systems will stay in the lineup. The brand cited no official reason for the shift, but it’s no mystery. Ongoing development of EV technologies and slowing market adoption rates likely have influenced the strategy revision.
Hybrid, EV, and ICE Model Timeline Adjustments
The ES sedan, revealed in Shanghai earlier this year, will be sold with both electric and hybrid powertrains starting in late 2026. The subcompact UX crossover will be reengineered in 2026 and offered solely as a hybrid. Lexus’ first EV, the RZ, will receive announced range improvements, bringing its expected range to approximately 480 kilometres. A new F-Sport variant is scheduled to arrive in 2026.
The three-row TX crossover will undergo a freshening in 2027, while a new electric model of similar size is under development and expected the same year. Larger utility models, such as the GX and LX, are scheduled for updates in 2028, in line with Lexus’ standard product cycles. The LX was reengineered in 2025 to include a hybrid powertrain.
The compact NX and midsize RX crossovers are also due for redesigns or freshenings in 2028.
Production of the LC and IS 500 V8 models will end in 2026. Other variants of the IS will continue with no major updates planned into 2026.

LFA-Inspired EV Supercar Under Development
Lexus is also developing a battery-electric sports coupe inspired by its LFA supercar, expected in late 2026. Targeting a 0–96 km/h acceleration time in the low two-second range, the vehicle is likely to serve as a halo model. Its projected range exceeds 640 kilometres, potentially utilizing solid-state batteries still in development.
