Many have likened it to Darth Vader’s mask.
Going forward, the Spindle Grille will be integrated into the front fascia.
Without going right out and saying, Lexus has acknowledged that its signature often-times oversized spindle grille has turned off potential customers. For the last decade, the grille has grown proportionally with the size of the vehicle however it’s rarely been considered a flattering feature.
Lexus is well aware that the signature grille has been a point of contention as many have likened it to the famous Darth Vader – could have been much worse… This is why, going forward, Lexus designers will physically integrate and blend the spindle into its surroundings.
Lexus global design chief Koichi Suga told Automotive News: “We want to maintain the spindle shape itself. But the spindle has always been based on functionality of what’s happening under the hood,”
So far, we have seen the new all-electric Lexus RZ that manifestly does not have a grille, but the spindle shape is extremely obvious. With the all-new 2023 RX, once more, the shape is evident however it is fused into the bumper, or better yet, cut out of its immediate environment.
