A new gateway car is coming from Lexus by 2021. It will likely be based on Toyota TNGA platform.
Lexus has confirmed that they will introduce a new model that will slot below that of the current Lexus UX and that it will be based on Toyota’s excellent TNGA platform.
Toyota’s latest platform is quickly finding its way under all of the brand’s latest products, transforming them from mundane overall into brilliant driving machines. Unfortunately, the TNGA cannot fix exterior design…
While we enjoyed spending time at the wheel of the UX, we were forced to recognize that it is borderline pointless as anything but a 2-seater faux-SUV. In a conversation with Lexus’ European boss Pascal Ruch, Autocar learned that this new base Lexus car will arrive sometime around 2021.
In the past, Lexus offered the CT 200h hybrid hatchback which, other than being tiny and also a 2+2 car, was actually more than decent at doing its job. As this next entry-level Lexus is to slot below that of the UX, which is also built upon the TNGA and shares numerous components with the CH-R and Corolla hatchback, we suspect that it too will feature the same 2.0-litre engine and hybrid powertrains.
Other than that, the question is what body-style will is sport? Another SUV? Likely. A 5-door hatchback like the Corolla? Also quite possible. We’ll find out more soon enough.
