  • Lucid has recently expanded with a new assembly plant in Saudi Arabia, aiming to boost future sales.

Lucid Motors has announced the commencement of production for its high-performance Lucid Air Sapphire at the Casa Grande factory in Arizona. This announcement comes following the release of the electric sedan’s final specifications last month, with customer deliveries anticipated in the ensuing weeks.

The Air Sapphire is recognized as the most impressive version within the Lucid Air lineup. It is equipped with twin rear motors and a singular motor on the front, producing over 1,430 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle also utilizes a 118-kilowatt-hour battery, similar to the Dream Edition. This configuration allows the Sapphire to achieve an impressive EPA-estimated range of 427 miles, with an efficiency of 3.61 miles/kWh. In terms of performance metrics, the sedan can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 1.89 seconds, reach 100 mph in 3.84 seconds, and complete a quarter-mile in 8.95 seconds, boasting a top speed of 205 mph. Notably, the Air Sapphire outperformed the Tesla Model S Plaid in a quarter-mile race earlier this year.

However, sales of the Lucid Air, which starts at $82,000 for the Pure variant and climbs to $249,000 for the Sapphire, have been modest. Some suggest the substantial pricing could be a factor affecting its market performance. Despite this, Lucid’s production statistics are on an upward trajectory. In the second quarter of 2023, the company produced 2,173 units, marking a 204% increase from the same period in 2022. Deliveries for the quarter also rose by 107% year-over-year. Lucid is anticipated to share its third-quarter production and delivery data shortly.

To further its market reach and potentially enhance sales, Lucid has expanded its production footprint. The company inaugurated its first international assembly facility, named Advanced Manufacturing Plant 2 (AMP-2), located in the King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia. Initial plans for this facility target the assembly of 5,000 units, with aspirations to ramp up capacity to 155,000 units in subsequent phases.
