Lucid Unveils Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging Innovation

Lucid introduces RangeXchange, a vehicle-to-vehicle charging technology for the Lucid Air, allowing energy transfer to other electric vehicles.

  • RangeXchange allows a Lucid Air to charge other EVs, offering 24 to 40 miles of range per hour using a new charging adapter and an OTA update.

  • Lucid’s proprietary bi-directional Wunderbox technology facilitates this feature, marking Lucid’s first foray into vehicle-to-vehicle energy transfer.

  • The adapter will soon be available for U.S. customers, enhancing the Lucid Air’s functionality and customer experience with post-purchase software updates.

Lucid has launched its RangeXchange accessory, enabling a feature that allows Lucid Air vehicles to charge other electric vehicles (EVs). The technology functions through Lucid’s Wunderbox system, a bi-directional charging platform designed in-house. The power transfer rate can reach up to 9.6 kW, which translates to an added range of approximately 24 to 40 miles per hour of charging, depending on the efficiency of the receiving vehicle and environmental conditions.

This capability is not only a convenience feature but also a step towards a more integrated electric vehicle ecosystem where energy can be shared among users. The company emphasizes that this service is enabled by a combination of hardware and software, and showcases the potential of OTA updates in enhancing vehicle capabilities long after the initial purchase.

Lucid’s CEO, Peter Rawlinson, expressed pride in the brand’s continuous innovation, highlighting that RangeXchange is a significant enhancement for EV usability. Eric Bach, Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer, underscored the Wunderbox’s versatility, noting its potential for future applications such as vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid services. Additionally, Mike Bell, Senior Vice President of Digital at Lucid, pointed out the value added by OTA updates facilitated by the integration of the company’s hardware and software.

The RangeXchange feature, which will be made available first to U.S. customers, requires a dedicated charging cable adapter and the latest OTA software update. This adapter will be sold exclusively by Lucid later in the month, and its price has yet to be confirmed by the company. Canadian availability should follow suit shortly.
