Problems tied to Ford’s EcoBoost engines are unfortunately nothing new. Far too many cases over the years have dragged the company into court in both the U.S. and Canada. This time, it’s the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine found in the Ford Edge that’s landed on American regulators’ radar.

A First Step, Not Yet a Full Investigation
It’s worth pointing out that NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the U.S. equivalent of Transport Canada, hasn’t opened a formal investigation, let alone issued a recall. Instead, NHTSA has opened a petition, the first step that lets regulators determine whether the volume of complaints warrants further action.
From there, the agency can either launch a full investigation or close the file if the evidence gathered isn’t deemed sufficient.
A Familiar Symptom
According to affected owners, the engine suddenly loses power. A coolant overheating warning then pops up on the dash. After a cool-down period, the vehicle may restart, but with a rough idle.
No crashes, fires, or injuries have been reported so far, but the number of complaints has been enough to catch investigators’ attention.
Ford is known to be working on its quality issues. Even if the company gets there, it will still have to deal with the vehicles already on the road that are showing problems.
Ford has already recalled more than a million EcoBoost-powered vehicles for other, similar issues. Owners of a 2015-2018 Edge should watch for these warning signs and have their vehicle checked promptly if they notice any.
