The first-generation CX-30 is a subcompact SUV that is enjoyable to drive and well finished, built on the same platform as the Mazda3. The Automobile Protection Association forecasts above-average reliability, with a reservation about the turbo engine. What stands out is oil consumption on some 2021-2022 2.5-litre turbos. Transport Canada also lists six recalls, including the airbags in 2024-2025.
- Oil consumption (2.5L turbo, 2021-2022). The warning light comes on before the oil change. Oil gets past the exhaust valve stem seals.
- 12-volt battery. It goes flat after short trips or with a dash cam plugged in, and the driver assistance systems shut off with it. There is no recall for this.
- Windshield. A stone chip spreads quickly. Some accounts also describe a crack with no impact while the vehicle was parked. The driver assistance camera is in the glass, so a replacement requires recalibration. There is no recall, and no Canadian price has been established.

Technical Briefing
This generation is a hatchback SUV, assembled in Salamanca, Mexico, with a six-speed automatic. The specifications are in the table.
| Years | Engine | Power and torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-2023, GX | 2.0L | 155 hp, 150 lb-ft | All-wheel drive optional, standard in 2022. No longer offered in 2024 |
| 2020-2022, non-turbo | 2.5L | 186 hp, 186 lb-ft | Cylinder deactivation mainly on the 2020 GT |
| 2023-2025, non-turbo | 2.5L | 191 hp, 186 lb-ft | All-wheel drive standard. Cylinder deactivation on the GX from 2024 |
| 2021-2025, turbo | 2.5L turbo | 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular, 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium | No cylinder deactivation |
From 2023, the 2.5-litre is rated at 8.2 L/100 km combined. The 2025 turbo is rated at 10.5, 7.9 and 9.3 L/100 km city, highway and combined. Regular gasoline is enough. Premium delivers full power. Towing is not recommended. The Mazda Canada warranty is 3 years for new vehicle coverage, 5 years for the powertrain and 7 years against perforation, with unlimited kilometres.

Most frequent problems
Oil in the 2.5-litre turbo engine
On some 2021 and 2022 CX-30 turbos, the low oil level message comes on well before the oil change is due. The level drops because exhaust valve stem seals, the ones that seal the valve stem, let oil pass into the cylinder.
Sometimes engine trouble code P250F comes on at the same time. It signals a level that is too low. Mazda documented damaged exhaust valve stem seals, which were later redesigned. Bulletin 01-003/23 describes the repair. The range covers certain vehicles produced from December 7, 2020, to June 30, 2022, and only if they appear on the dealer network’s list. The 2.0-litre and the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre are not included. The same part also affects 2021 and 2022 Mazda3 2.5-litre turbos, as well as 2021 Mazda6, CX-5 and CX-9 2.5-litre turbos.
This is not a recall. No Canadian program extends the warranty beyond the five-year powertrain coverage, with unlimited kilometres. The APA considers the non-turbo models durable and leaves the turbo uncertain at high mileage, without specifics.

Battery, airbags and brakes
There is no recall on the battery. A weak battery shuts off the driver assistance systems. Under normal conditions, it does not affect the airbags. The 2025 recall is a separate case.
On May 29, 2025, a recall targeted certain 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX-30 models. After the ignition is left in the ON position too long, the battery drains and the sensor can prevent deployment. The vehicle is inspected, then the software is updated or the sensor is replaced.
On June 12, 2025, Protégez-Vous, Quebec’s consumer-protection magazine, mentioned more than two hours with the ignition in ON. That time frame is not in the Transport Canada notice.
In 2020, front brake caliper bolts could be improperly tightened. They are retightened. If one is missing, the caliper and the remaining bolt are replaced. In 2023, a recall on the anti-lock brake module targeted 2023 CX-30 and CX-50 models. The Canadian notice does not include the 2022 models.
Windshield and driver assistance systems
Some accounts describe a chip that spreads, and sometimes a crack while the vehicle was parked. This crack without impact remains an allegation. There is no recall, and no Canadian price has been established. The driver assistance camera is in the glass. Without recalibration, the systems misread the road.
Emergency braking can also activate without a clear obstacle, or shut off when the camera can no longer see because of frost, condensation or sun glare. This is not a Canadian recall.

Other powertrains
On the non-turbo 2.5-litre, cylinder deactivation shuts off two cylinders when demand is low, between 1,500 and 1,650 rpm, to burn less fuel. Some drivers then feel a low vibration. The GX’s 2.0-litre, through 2023, does not have this feature. Neither does the turbo.
On 2.5-litre engines with deactivation produced before February 10, 2020, mostly GTs, a bulletin provides modified radiator mounts to address this vibration. This is not a recall. From 2021 to 2025, a cold lifter ticking noise on this same engine is described in service alert SA-030/25. The oil is checked, then the engine is held at 2,500 to 3,000 rpm with no load for two minutes, once it is warm.
The automatic does not stand out as a problem. The APA describes it as having no apparent problems.

The recalls
Six campaigns with Transport Canada, often shared with another Mazda model. Except for the 2020 hose, the 2021 valves and the liftgate (3,600 equipped CX-30s), the unit count includes other models.
| TC | Date | Defect | Variant | Years | Units |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-264 | June 12, 2020 | Improperly tightened front caliper bolts | Mazda3 and CX-30 | 2020 | 4,195 |
| 2020-265 | June 12, 2020 | Improperly connected fuel vapour hose. Possible leak and stalling | CX-30 with all-wheel drive | 2020 | 2,422 |
| 2021-075 | February 19, 2021 | Power liftgate that does not close properly on a slope | CX-30 with power liftgate | 2020-2021 | 3,600 |
| 2021-091 | February 22, 2021 | Tire valve stems damaged during installation | CX-30 | 2021 | 133 |
| 2023-232 | April 18, 2023 | Damaged anti-lock brake module. Longer pedal travel | CX-30 and CX-50 | 2023 | 156 |
| 2025-294 | May 29, 2025 | Ignition left in ON, then airbag sensor that blocks deployment | Mazda3 and CX-30 | 2024-2025 | 34,650 |
The U.S. records
Complaints filed in Canada are not gathered in a public database. The CX-30s sold here come from the same plant, in Salamanca. The U.S. records can help us understand what keeps coming up on these vehicles, and what does not apply here.
U.S. complaints total 248 for these years, including 101 for 2021. That year, the engine accounts for 37 of those 101 files, or 36.6%. The Guthrie settlement created a program in the United States called SSPD5. It is an extension of the powertrain warranty, from 5 years or 60,000 miles to 7 years or 84,000 miles. In August 2025, the court clarified that this extension covers the powertrain list in the warranty booklet, not just oil. No equivalent program was found at Mazda Canada.
Volkswagen Confirms ID. Tiguan as Successor to ID.4 and ID.5 in 2027
The U.S. notice on the anti-lock brake module adds certain 2022 CX-30s, and the one on the valves adds 2021 Mazda3s. The Canadian notices do not. A September 3, 2024, campaign covers a front camera left in factory mode, on vehicles built in Salamanca from July 10 to 23, 2024. The notice mentions 672 vehicles, all models combined. There is no notice in Canada. A vehicle identification number (VIN) from that two-week window is still worth checking, because the CX-30s sold here come from the same plant.
What owners say
The APA rates reliability as above average, with no structural rust problems. Its report focuses mainly on the reliability of the 2020-2023 models. It still points to rear discs that rust, small leaks at the timing chain cover, and rear shock absorbers that leak or clunk. The oil issue owners talk about comes mainly from the 2021 turbo version.
The rest of the picture is good. The APA considers the non-turbo engines durable. The reservation is the turbo, especially in 2021 and 2022.

In conclusion
Here is what to watch for, model year by model year.
2020. Have the calipers confirmed (2020-264). If it has all-wheel drive, have the fuel vapour hose confirmed (2020-265) and do not fill the tank to the brim until it has been corrected. If there is a power liftgate, add 2021-075. A 2.5-litre with cylinder deactivation produced before February 10, 2020, has a radiator mount bulletin, not a recall.
2021, and turbos up to June 30, 2022. A naturally aspirated engine does not carry the same oil risk as a turbo. Ask for the oil change invoices and whether the seals have been replaced. Do not count on the U.S. coverage in Canada. Check the valves (2021-091) and the liftgate if equipped (2021-075).
2022-2023, preferably without the turbo. All-wheel drive is standard, and these naturally aspirated models are outside the oil range. In 2023, check the anti-lock brake module (2023-232). A 2022 CX-30 is not on this Canadian notice. Ask the dealer, without concluding that the recall applies.
2024-2025. The 2.0-litre is no longer offered. Have the airbag recall (2025-294) done. It is free. A vehicle built from July 10 to 23, 2024, should also be checked for the camera, even though there is no Canadian notice. The turbo in these years is outside the seal range. The APA still leaves its durability uncertain, without figures.
Before signing, check the VIN at recalls-rappels.canada.ca and at rappelsmazda.ca, or by calling 1-800-263-4680.
Safe travels!
