Mazda delays its electric model to 2029 and prioritizes hybridization

Electric vehicles intended for the North American market have largely shifted into “pause,” “cancellation,” or “later” mode. This reality can be attributed in part to the rollback of purchase incentives, but also to a growing “anti-electric” sentiment, particularly south of the border. In this context, Mazda is the latest automaker to postpone the launch of its electric SUV. For now, it is expected to arrive in 2029 — roughly three years from now.

  • Mazda pushes its electric SUV back to 2029
  • Subsidy cancellations in the U.S. and tariffs cited as key reasons
  • Mazda 6e (EZ-6) and CX-6e (EZ-60) could be interesting options for Canada
  • Mazda to focus on hybridization in the short term

Mazda is clearly not a brand that has fully committed to electrification. At present, its only electrified offerings are mild-hybrid powertrains in the CX-70 and CX-90 lineups, with nothing else on the table. Even when it comes to hybridization, Mazda relies on Toyota for the CX-50 Hybrid’s powertrain. It is also well known that Mazda struggled with the concept of its sole battery-electric vehicle to date, the MX-30. While the format and design were appealing, the drivetrain required too many compromises due to its limited driving range.

China in the spotlight

Since its withdrawal in 2023, Mazda has no electric vehicles on offer in North America. The situation is different in China, however, where Mazda remains active through its local partner Changan, which produces the Mazda 6e and CX-6e, both recently introduced.

Unfortunately, the 100% tariffs imposed by U.S. and Canadian governments have effectively blocked any potential expansion of these models into North America. In Canada, the renewed dialogue between Ottawa and Beijing could theoretically allow these vehicles to enter the market. That said, given homologation costs, their arrival in the short term remains unlikely.

A midsize electric SUV

As for the fully Mazda-developed product — a midsize electric SUV — it was originally expected to debut next year, but has now been pushed back by at least two years, bringing its launch timeline to 2029. This information comes from Automotive News, which cites Japanese publications Nikkei and Nikkan Jidosha. Mazda, however, told Automotive News that it was not the source of this claim.

Will Mazda be ready?

Speaking through its CEO Masahiro Moro, the automaker did not deny the report but instead offered a measured response: “We continue to advance the technological development of our proprietary battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as part of our multi-solution strategy, and we will determine the timing of their introduction while carefully assessing regulatory trends in each country and changes in customer needs.”

He added: “I still want to keep the timing from a technology development point of view. But implementation could be changed, although it’s not decided yet.” He concluded by saying: “Mazda is always listening to the market’s voice.”

In the meantime, Mazda says it will concentrate on hybrid powertrains. Currently, the CX-70 and CX-90 are available with plug-in hybrid systems, while the CX-50 is offered with a Toyota-sourced hybrid setup. Mazda has also confirmed that the next-generation CX-5 will feature an in-house developed hybrid powertrain. That system is expected to debut with the 2027 model year CX-5.
