Mazda Rejects Touchscreen-Everything Approach with Smart Cockpit Design

Japanese automaker's Smart Cockpit philosophy prioritizes driver safety over touchscreen complexity in electric vehicle technology demonstration.

  • Smart Cockpit design reduces driver distraction with natural control placement

  • Head-Up Display projects data at a 7.5-metre focus distance

  • Voice and gesture controls offer touchscreen alternatives

While the automotive industry grapples with touchscreen complexity driving customer frustration, Mazda has unveiled a technology philosophy that prioritizes human-centric design over digital interfaces. The Japanese automaker’s Smart Cockpit concept, demonstrated in the new Mazda6e electric vehicle, offers a compelling alternative to the touchscreen-heavy approach that recent quality studies show is frustrating drivers worldwide.

Mazda’s approach directly addresses the distraction issues plaguing modern vehicles, where essential functions like climate control and hazard lights have migrated to touchscreen menus requiring multiple taps and swipes. Instead of relegating controls to digital interfaces, the Smart Cockpit philosophy positions displays and controls to “radiate naturally from the driver’s field of vision to reduce distraction and improve reaction time.”

The centrepiece is a large Head-Up Display that projects critical driving data—including speed, navigation prompts, and safety alerts—onto the windscreen at an optimal focus distance of 7.5 metres. This technology eliminates the need for drivers to look down at dashboard screens, keeping their eyes on the road while accessing essential information. Drivers can customize information levels through three modes: Minimal, Classic, or Custom, with an additional Snow Mode that changes display colours for enhanced winter visibility.

Technology Shaped Around People

Touchscreen Complexity Drives Infotainment Problems in New Vehicles

The Smart Cockpit design philosophy extends beyond the Head-Up Display to encompass a thoughtful integration of digital and physical interfaces. A 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel presents essential vehicle status information, while a 14.6-inch central touchscreen handles communication, entertainment, and vehicle settings with smartphone-like operation and personalization capabilities.

Critically, Mazda hasn’t abandoned physical interaction entirely. The system incorporates voice recognition available in nine European languages, enabling hands-free operation of navigation, audio, and climate control systems. For situations requiring discretion—such as sleeping passengers—intuitive gesture controls provide an alternative way to accept calls or operate audio systems without speaking or touching screens.

The technology extends to automated convenience through six pre-configured Vehicle Modes that group multiple functions into single commands for common scenarios. Fresh Air Mode opens the driver’s window and activates cabin purification, while Car Wash Mode automatically folds mirrors, closes windows, deactivates wipers, and retracts the spoiler. These preset modes eliminate the need to navigate through multiple touchscreen menus for routine tasks.

Beyond Touchscreen Dependence

The human-centric approach extends to vehicle access and sharing through the dedicated Mazda6e App, which enables remote management of charging schedules, cabin pre-conditioning, and security status checks. Bluetooth Key Sharing allows owners to grant vehicle access to up to three users for predefined periods, demonstrating how smartphone integration can enhance rather than complicate the driving experience.

Mazda’s welcome ceremony, inspired by the Japanese concept of omotenashi—thoughtful hospitality—activates automatically as the vehicle detects the key. Side mirrors unfold, door handles present themselves, doors unlock, and distinctive lighting greets the driver, with the sequence reversing upon departure. This automation reduces interaction complexity while maintaining personal connection.

The Smart Cockpit philosophy is a marked departure from the industry trend of consolidating controls into central touchscreens. Rather than forcing drivers to adapt to technology, Mazda has designed technology that adapts to human behaviour and needs.

As recent quality studies reveal growing frustration with touchscreen complexity and safety organizations mandate physical controls for essential functions, Mazda’s human-centric approach offers a roadmap for manufacturers seeking to balance technological advancement with driver safety and convenience. The company’s assertion that “technology should be shaped around people—not the other way around” provides a guiding principle for an industry reconsidering its relationship with digital interfaces.
