Mazda will Unveil the new CX-70 on January 30

The Mazda CX-70 will be unveiled at the end of the month.

  • The CX-70 will share the same powertrains as the larger CX-90.

  • Rumours say this new model will be a two-row version of the CX-90.

  • The company will lift the veil on the CX-70 at 11 am EST on January 30.

We have known for a while now that Mazda is working on a new SUV called the CX-70, but few details are available on the subject.

This will change soon, however, since the company has revealed on its Canadian website that its latest SUV will be officially unveiled on January 30 at 11 am EST.

The CX-70 was initially scheduled to be launched late last year, but initial delays have pushed this date back to the end of the current month.

As mentioned before, Mazda has kept information about the upcoming CX-70 to a minimum, but a few details have leaked through.

For instance, a disclosure to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has shown us that the new CX-70 will be offered with all of the same engines that can be ordered in the CX-90.

This means we should expect the entry-level version to be powered by a 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that generates 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque with the help of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

A more powerful version of the same powertrain should deliver 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque while an available plug-in hybrid system will use a 2.5L four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to achieve 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, in addition to an undisclosed all-electric range. In the CX-90, this powertrain allows 42 kilometres of emission-free driving.

Like all other Mazda SUVs in Canada, we already know that all versions of the CX-70 will come standard with the company’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system.

The similarities between the CX-90 and the new CX-70 might not end at the powertrains, however, since Mazda has confirmed to its investors that the new SUV will be a five-seater variant of the CX-90, which can accommodate up to 8 passengers in some configurations.

Judging by a trend that has become more popular over the last few years, this likely means that the CX-70 will feature a lower roofline than the CX-90 in an effort to achieve a more dynamic, coupe-like silhouette, although this is still speculation.

What is almost certain, however, is that the CX-70 will share much of its exterior and interior design with its larger brother, especially up front.

The CX-70 will be the last model in Mazda’s plan to move its lineup slightly upmarket, at least for now, in North America. This strategy which was introduced with the launch of the CX-30 a few years ago called for four SUVs in North America (CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-90) and three in Europe (CX-30, CX-60, CX-80).
