The 2024 Mazda CX-30 is the most affordable crossover in the Japanese brand’s lineup, and has been since the Mazda CX-3 was discontinued after the 2022 model year.
Following its introduction in 2019 as a 2020 model, the CX-30 has received several improvements over time, and remains one the most engaging to drive in the subcompact crossover segment.
2024 Mazda CX-30 Changes and Updates
The CX-30 gets a bunch of changes this year. First and foremost, the 2.0L four-cylinder engine has been dropped, meaning the naturally aspirated 2.5L inline-four is now the base powerplant, still managed by the six-speed automatic transmission. The old 2.0L unit wasn’t any more efficient than the 2.5L engine.
The 12-volt power outlet, or cigarette socket, is gone, as is HD Radio and SD card navigation compatibility in base trim levels. Rain-sensing wipers have also been removed from the Canadian-market GX. The Smart City Brake Support – Front system adds pedestrian detection, and Rear Seat Alert is also new. The U.S.-market CX-30 gets blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard.
A 10.25-inch infotainment system touchscreen is newly available in uplevel trims. It’s touch-sensitive when Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is activated to facilitate their use, but only when the vehicle is immobilized. Navigating the Mazda Connect interface still requires using the multifunction controller. Higher trims also get wireless phone charging, USB-C ports as well as wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
The U.S.-market 2.5 Carbon Turbo and Canadian-market Suna Edition are new, sporting exclusive features such as Zircon Sand Metallic paint and a Terracotta/Black leatherette interior.
Finally, Ceramic Metallic replaces Sonic Silver Metallic, and the Greige interior colorway has been removed from Canadian CX-30’s order guide.
2024 Mazda CX-30 Trim Levels and Pricing
The U.S. market gets 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select Sport, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 Carbon Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus trim levels.
In Canada, the 2024 Mazda CX-30 is offered in GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo and Suna Edition variants.
The base engine is a 2.5-litre inline-four that develops 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, managed by a six-speed automatic transmission. The uplevel trims get a turbocharged 2.5L inline-four that generates 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque using regular fuel, or 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet using 93-octane fuel. In both countries, all-wheel drive is standard.

What the 2024 Mazda CX-30 Does Well
- The Mazda CX-30 is engaging to drive. It’s among the most amusing in the subcompact crossover segment, no matter which engine we choose.
- The CX-30 benefits from a superb design inside and out. It gives the impression that we’re buying a vehicle that’s worth more than the price we paid for it.
- The 2.5L engine has received improvements in 2023 to make it more powerful and more efficient as well. The CX-30 ranks mid-pack in the subcompact segment.
- The CX-30’s all-wheel drivetrain is very capable for both handling and winter conditions. It may be a reactive system that sends available power to the rear wheels when slippage is detected, that task is performed in milliseconds.
What the 2024 Mazda CX-30 Doesn’t Do Well
- It’s not the most spacious in its category. Cargo space is also below average.
- The CX-30’s small window surface means outward visibility isn’t very good.
- While the turbo engine’s extra power and torque can certainly be felt under spirited driving, at a more relaxed pace or during the daily commute, it’s doesn’t feel more athletic. The generous torque peak is more impressive on paper than in real-world driving.
- Mazda’s infotainment system isn’t the easiest to use. However, it was designed to be less distracting while driving, and the console-mounted multifunction knob with accompanying volume knob helps keep our eyes on the road. Browsing through the menus seems complex at first, but over time, we get used to it. On the other hand, if we’re true believers of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system isn’t as user-friendly.
