Polestar is officially a stand-alone automaker today. Perhaps maybe not technically, but the brand unveiled its first vehicle, the all-new Polestar 1. If the folks at Polestar manage to pull this off, the automotive world will have gained one heck of a new performance car.
Using a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine provided by Volvo combined with two electric engines, the Polestar 1 gives the driver 600 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. It can also go on electric power only for about 150 kilometers, making it the plug-in hybrid vehicle with the most range on the market. At least on paper.
There will be plenty of tech features as well, starting with an app that lets you unlock the doors without a key or let others get in the vehicle if needed.
There will be a starting run of 500 units produced, and Polestar says you can order your Polestar 1 today although no details were given in regards to pricing. We do know that the first models are expected off the lines in 2019. They will be built in China.
What was once Volvo’s answer to Mercedes-AMG or BMW M is now running on its own, and if the Polestar 1 is what the new automaker has come up with to get the ball rolling, we can’t wait to see what else it has in store.
