Mercedes-AMG Teases AMG GT XX Prototype on the Las Vegas Strip

The unveiling of AMG’s first fully electric super sedan is scheduled for sometime in 2026. To build excitement ahead of the launch, a prototype made a surprise appearance in Las Vegas during the festivities surrounding the F1 Grand Prix.

  • The car drove along the Strip during the Las Vegas Grand Prix
  • The design is heavily inspired by the AMG GT XX concept
  • It’s built on the new AMG.EA architecture equipped with ultra-high-performance axial-flux electric motors

As is tradition with every Las Vegas Grand Prix, the city was transformed into a fortress of scaffolding and temporary structures designed to accommodate racing fans. Mercedes took full advantage of that setup to flaunt the evolution of its electric four-door performance sedan.

The prototype wore a colourful wrap and far less camouflage than previous sightings. A number of design elements already appear close to production, including star-inspired headlights and a fully enclosed grille, typical of modern EVs. Vertical air curtains and a subtle front splitter complete the face of the car.

From the side, the car features a sharply raked windshield, a sloping roofline, and bodywork sculpted to optimize aerodynamic efficiency. In that regard, the sedan is nearly identical to the GT XX concept. Flush-mounted door handles and clean body surfaces confirm the chosen design direction. The rear remains partially masked, but the lower bumper looks production ready. The three illuminated rings on each side should make it to the final version, although the use of a rear LED display capable of showing messages seems highly unlikely.

Interior glimpses don’t reveal much, but previous spy photos have shown a flat-bottom steering wheel and a large curved display, very much in line with the futuristic cockpit seen in the AMG GT XX concept.

Mercedes has been teasing this model for nearly two years now. It’s already confirmed that the car will ride on the all-new AMG.EA platform, a mix of aluminum, steel and composite materials engineered for reduced weight and exceptional rigidity. For Mercedes-Benz, this platform represents the technological foundation for the brand’s electric future.

AMG Reveals Electric Concept with Five-Minute Charging Capability

Under the skin, the production version is expected to feature a next-generation battery and, depending on the configuration, up to three axial-flux motors. These motors helped the concept achieve more than 1,000 kW (1,341 hp), a remarkable technical showcase.

The production model will likely be more conservative, but Mercedes-AMG is placing huge expectations on this next-generation GT 4-Door, which will be followed by a future SUV built on the same architecture.

While BMW is focusing on mainstream products with its upcoming Neue Klasse lineup, Mercedes-AMG is aiming at the upper echelon. That strategy is somewhat surprising, especially considering the brand chose to lead with a sedan, even though the market for high-performance electric sedans has been struggling. Sales of the Lucid Air Sapphire and Tesla Model S Plaid speak for themselves. Buyers overwhelmingly prefer SUVs, so why double down on a sedan?

Add to that a design that appears rather generic for a vehicle that will certainly come with a steep price tag, and Mercedes-Benz may already be facing an uphill battle. Even before its official debut, this GT electric sedan has all the makings of another commercial misstep in the brand’s ongoing electrification efforts.
