Mercedes-Benz Baby G-Wagon Will be EV: Report

Electric mini-G coming

  • A smaller G-Class is coming, with electric power

  • Mercedes to make G a sub-brand like AMG

Mercedes-Benz is planning a smaller version of the G-Class. It will expand the G range and will only be offered as an electric model; no hybrid or ICE versions will be built.

Benz CEO Ola Källenius confirmed the arrival of the mini G back at the Munich show. He called it “little G… a son or daughter of the iconic big G”.

Earlier this month, the company’s technical boss, Markus Schäfer, confirmed to Autocar that the mini G would only be sold as an electric vehicle. The exec broke the news at the CES show in Las Vegas.

The smaller electric G will be built on a new platform, Schäfer said, not the MMA platform Benz is planning to use with its next-gen entry-level cars starting with the latest CLA. Instead, the little G will use modules from Merc’s larger rear-drive cars. The platform bump is necessary because Mercedes-Benz wants it to be a real off-roader.

According to the report, this will be the start of transforming G into a brand of its own. Much like Mercedes-Benz has done with Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach. But G models will likely need to be more than just the cosmetic and power upgrades those brands deliver.

Benz design chief Gorden Wagener told Autocar that the new model will have strong design cues from the big G-Class. “It will have its own character, but it will be a G.”
