Mercedes-Benz Expands Electric GLC Lineup with Two New Variants

The luxury compact SUV segment has never been more competitive. Audi, BMW, Volvo, Tesla, and Mercedes-Benz are all vying for dominance, and to broaden its reach, Mercedes-Benz is adding two new variants to the electric GLC lineup. The GLC 300 stands a very strong chance of making it to Canada.

  • The GLC EV lineup now includes three powertrain options
  • The GLC 300 and GLC 250 feature a smaller 85 kWh battery pack
  • Estimated ranges are 527 and 557 kilometres (EPA-equivalent)

In addition to the GLC 400 launched a few months ago, Mercedes-Benz is now unveiling two additional variants of the GLC EV, its new all-electric compact SUV. Visually, nothing has changed — the real updates lie beneath the bodywork.

Smaller Battery Pack, Lower Entry Price

The GLC 400 comes with a 94 kWh battery, while the GLC 300 and GLC 250 make do with 85 kWh. In all cases, the technology relies on an 800V lithium-ion architecture. The goal of this reduction is to lower the starting price of the lineup. The 800V architecture is especially impactful when it comes to charging speed: Mercedes-Benz claims a maximum charging capacity of 320 kW, enabling a 10–80% charge in just 22 minutes — under optimal conditions.

Powertrain Options: RWD vs. AWD

One key point to note: the GLC 250 is rear-wheel drive only. Its single electric motor produces 260 kW (349 hp). Given its RWD configuration, it seems unlikely that Mercedes-Benz will bring this variant to Canada. While it could certainly compete with the Tesla Model Y, such a strategy would be surprising for the brand in this market.

That brings us to the GLC 300, which adds a second motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive. Total output rises to 310 kW (416 hp) with 590 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes-Benz quotes a 0–100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds for the GLC 300, while the GLC 250 manages the same sprint in 5.9 seconds.

Range and Availability

Official Canadian figures have yet to be confirmed. Mercedes-Benz has released range estimates based on the WLTP testing cycle: up to 650 km for the GLC 250 and 616 km for the GLC 300. Using the Natural Resources Canada conversion method, those figures translate to approximately 557 km and 527 km respectively.

For now, we are still awaiting official confirmation from Mercedes-Benz regarding the Canadian availability of these models. The GLC 250 remains doubtful, but the GLC 300 has every chance of reaching this side of the Atlantic.
