Mercedes-Benz has plans to bring another SUV to the market, this time the GLB unveiled last week.
It barely took a week for the Mercedes-Benz GLB to go from concept to production. This is another case where a concept is merely a gussied-up version of a real production vehicle. Only last week, Mercedes-Benz revealed the Concept GLB to world. To be fair, we read about and seen rendering of the Mercedes-Benz GLB for a while so we knew what to expect.
What we didn’t expect so soon was to learn that Mercedes-Benz will in fact build the rugged little GLB before long. The boxy and rugged off-roader will above the GLA, which is due for a serious overhaul before long, and the recently upgraded GLC.
From the looks of it, the Mercedes-Benz GLB will share numerous components with the all-new A Class and CLA. Chief of which will be the 224-horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine and 4MATIC AWD system. The latter may be tuned differently for the application – we’ll have to wait and see the final specs.
Of the many other elements that will make their way from one line to another will be the brand’s superb fully digital instrument cluster and MBUX infotainment system. We suspect the base setup will include the twin 7-inch screen with the pair of 10.25-inch screens coming in as option.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLB looks like it’ll be good fun on and off the road and will be loaded with all the latest tech. Difficult to see how it won’t do well in this tech- and SUV-crazed world we live in.
According to the Daimler blog, production of the GLB will begin later this year at the Peking/China and Aguascalientes/Mexico assembly plants.
