Mercedes announces the development of a smaller, budget-friendly electric version of the iconic boxy SUV, named “g-Wagon”, rather than “G-Wagon”.
· Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a smaller, more affordable all-electric version of its iconic G-Wagon.
· The G-Wagon EQG concept, an electric rendition of the G-Class, was showcased in 2021.
· The smaller electric G-Wagon model is expected to be based on a purely electric powertrain and could launch around 2026.
Mercedes-Benz, renowned for its luxurious vehicles, is set to democratize access to one of its priciest models. CEO Ola Kallenius recently revealed the automaker’s intention to introduce a smaller and more affordable all-electric variant of its iconic G-Wagon. This upcoming “baby” G-Class EV is designed to offer a compact form factor while delivering an enjoyable driving experience.
The G-Class EQG concept, an all-electric rendition of the beloved G-Class, was initially showcased at IAA Mobility in 2021. The design of the electric model remains faithful to the G-Class lineup, with contemporary updates that cater to the electric era. Confirming recent speculations, Kallenius announced at IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich that the G-Wagon family is expanding to include a smaller iteration.
Reports from the German publication Automobilwoche suggest that Mercedes has been contemplating the idea of a compact electric G-Wagon for several years. Even during the tenure of longtime leader Dieter Zetsche until 2019, rumors circulated about the brand’s intention to introduce a more budget-friendly version of the G-Wagon.
The timing for this endeavor seems apt, as noted by Kallenius. The reports indicate that the compact electric variant might adopt the name “g-Class” with a lowercase “g.” The vehicle will rely on a purely electric powertrain, possibly a blend of the upcoming MMA and MB.EA platforms.

The launch timeline for these models aligns with Mercedes’ broader electric strategy. The full-size G-Class EQG is anticipated to debut the following year, while the smaller electric variant, based on the MB.EA platform, is projected to arrive around 2026, following the platform’s launch in 2025.
Considering the starting price of a conventional Mercedes G-Class SUV at $139,900, the introduction of a compact electric version could considerably lower the entry barrier, broadening the market reach for the iconic model.
