Mercedes Electrifies Its Iconic G-Class With New All-Electric G 580

The Iconic G-Class Reimagined: Mercedes-Benz Launches Its First All-Electric Off-Roader, Combining Classic Design and Future-Forward Technology

  • Mercedes’ G 580 with EQ Technology merges classic G-Class design with electric propulsion.

  • Features include a 116-kWh battery, 579 hp, and advanced off-road capabilities like G-TURN.

  • 2025’s EDITION ONE offers exclusive trims, high-tech interior, and is pending EPA certification.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its first fully electric variant of the iconic G-Class off-roader, the G 580 with EQ Technology, fusing the vehicle’s legendary off-road capability with cutting-edge electric propulsion.

The all-new G 580 represents Mercedes’ latest move into electric mobility as it transitions more models to battery power. It maintains the G-Class‘s boxy, angular design while incorporating distinct styling cues like flared wheel arches and a raised hood to improve aerodynamics.

Under the iconic body lies a significant technological overhaul. A reinforced ladder frame houses a 116-kWh lithium-ion battery pack integrated to keep the center of gravity low. Four electric motors – one at each wheel – produce a combined 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque, rocketing the heavy SUV from 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

But it’s the G 580’s off-road prowess that truly separates it. The electric drivetrain enables unique abilities like G-TURN, which allows rotating the vehicle in place on loose surfaces by spinning the wheels in opposite directions. G-STEERING reduces the turning radius off-road via torque vectoring.

An intelligent off-road crawl function maintains preset speeds uphill or downhill, leaving drivers to focus on navigating obstacles. A shiftable two-speed transmission provides a low-range gear reduction. Upgraded suspension components boost capabilities like fording depth to 33.5 inches.

“The innovative drive concept once again raises the legendary performance of our off-road icon to a new level,” said Markus Schäfer, Mercedes’ chief technology officer.

Underneath, Mercedes fitted skid plates using carbon fibre composites rather than heavy steel or aluminum. Torque is precisely distributed to each wheel via a virtual differential lock system to maximize traction.

On the road, five ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT drive modes alter powertrain characteristics. The G 580 has a governed 112 mph top speed and recuperative braking to maximize efficiency.

Inside, the new model retains its classic upright layout but gains the latest MBUX infotainment system with twin 12.3-inch displays. Other standard features include a surround-sound audio system, ambient lighting, and wireless charging. An optional “transparent hood” camera view assists with visibility over crests.

For 2025, the U.S. market G 580 will be offered solely as the loaded EDITION ONE special edition with unique trim combinations and expanded equipment like massaging seats.

Mercedes did not provide U.S. pricing or electric range figures, which are still pending EPA certification.
