Mercedes-Benz has announced its latest addition to the electric vehicle (EV) market: the new electric CLA crossover. Aimed at competitors like the Tesla Model Y, this new model highlights Mercedes’ strategy to expand its lineup with more entry-level electric vehicles. The CLA crossover should attract a younger demographic and new customers to the Mercedes brand.

Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Previews Ultra-Efficient Upcoming EVs

The introduction of the electric CLA crossover is part of a broader initiative by Mercedes-Benz to diversify its electric vehicle offerings. The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class will include a four-door coupe, a shooting brake, and two crossovers. These vehicles will be built on the new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), an “electric-first” platform designed to support both electric and gasoline-powered vehicles. This flexible architecture will enable Mercedes’ to provide a versatile range of vehicles that cater to various consumer preferences and market demands.

The CLA crossover is salted to replace the EQB model, a superb SUV but mediocre EV, and target younger buyers who are new to the Mercedes brand. According to AutoForecast Solutions Vice President Sam Fiorani, the CLA crossover is expected to draw in more youthful customers with its sporty design and competitive pricing.

As reported by Automotive News, a Mercedes dealer noted that over half of CLA buyers are new to the brand, indicating that the CLA crossover could significantly boost Mercedes’ market share in the EV segment. Edmunds analyst Ivan Drury emphasized the need for Mercedes to focus on affordability, as the average transaction price for Mercedes vehicles has risen sharply, potentially alienating cost-conscious consumers.

The electric CLA coupe, codenamed C174, was showcased at the Munich auto show as part of the Concept CLA Class. This concept featured a 175-kilowatt electric motor with a two-speed transmission, offering impressive drivetrain and battery performance. The Concept CLA boasts a range of over 466 miles (750 km) on a single charge, based on European testing standards, and an 800-volt electric system capable of adding up to 248 miles (400 km) of range in just 15 minutes.

Design highlights of the Concept CLA include its aerodynamic profile and interior features such as an integrated display that combines the instrument cluster and infotainment screens. Dealers who previewed the CLA coupe described it as larger and sleeker than its combustion engine predecessor, with distinctive taillights featuring the Mercedes star logo pattern.

Production of the electric CLA crossover is set to begin in October 2025 at Mercedes’ factory in Rastatt, Germany, with additional production sites in Kecskemet, Hungary, and Beijing. The first models are expected to launch in the U.S. by late 2026. Mercedes’ strategy aims to balance luxury with affordability, adapting product development plans to meet market demands and transitioning to the MMA platform for future gasoline-powered models as well.
