Michelin remains one of the most storied and influential tire manufacturers on the planet, recognized for engineering breakthroughs, long-term durability, and consistent leadership in performance and safety. From pioneering modern radial technology to dominating motorsport and supplying premium manufacturers with tailored OE solutions, Michelin has built a level of trust few brands can match. Its reputation is particularly strong in Canada, where winter demands are some of the most severe in the world, making Michelin’s commitment to innovation especially relevant for drivers seeking confidence under unpredictable conditions.

Given the brand’s long-standing partnership with Audi, including multiple tire designs developed specifically for the German automaker, testing a set of P245/40R19 Michelin Pilot Alpin 5s on a new Audi A5 feels completely in step with the tire’s intended audience.
The A5, Audi’s refined midsize coupe and Sportback, represents the kind of vehicle the Pilot Alpin 5 was built to support: premium, sporty, … and driven by motorists who expect reassuring winter capability without sacrificing highway stability or steering precision.
Pilot Alpin 5: Designed for Control, Built for Winter
The Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 is engineered as a true performance-winter tire, aimed at drivers who demand strong winter traction while maintaining the sharper steering and stability they’re accustomed to during warmer months. Positioned above general-purpose winter tires, the Pilot Alpin 5 is tailored for coupes, sedans, sportier crossovers, and high-output vehicles where handling matters just as much as cold-weather confidence.

With its 3PMSF (three peak mountain snowflake) rating and EV-Ready construction, the Pilot Alpin 5 was conceived to deliver legitimate winter performance while accommodating the heavier weight and high torque of modern electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Tread Technology: Directional, Symmetrical, and Purpose-Built
The tire’s directional V-shaped tread pattern uses wide central channels to efficiently evacuate slush and water, reducing hydroplaning risk and enhancing braking performance in near-freezing rain. A continuous or near-continuous centre rib helps stabilize the contact patch at highway speeds, sharpening on-centre feel and steering response.
Across the tread blocks, high-density 3D siping creates countless biting edges for snow and ice traction. These sipes interlock under load to maintain rigidity, reinforcing stability and precision even during sudden manoeuvres. Michelin calls it the “StabiliGrip” technology.

Michelin’s winter-optimized compound blends silica and functional polymers to remain flexible in frigid temperatures while retaining enough stiffness for high-speed stability. This formulation improves wet grip, cold-weather braking, and rolling resistance over older designs. Compared with Michelin’s X-Ice Snow, the Pilot Alpin 5 skews slightly more toward handling and mixed-condition performance.
And this is exactly what we’re hoping to get from Michelin’s much lauded Pilot Alpin 5 winter tire.
Sizes, Fitments, and Durability
Offered in a broad range from 17 to 23 inches, including those of the SUV variant, the Pilot Alpin 5 fits most modern luxury sedans, sport coupes, and crossovers. It is also widely featured in OEM winter wheel packages from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Audi.

Michelin backs the tire with a generous 50,000-kilometre treadwear warranty, and though we won’t cover anywhere near this distance, we’re certain that every kilometre will be met with a sense of security and confidence.
