Mitsubishi to Launch New Electric Vehicle, Likely Based on Nissan LEAF

Mitsubishi to re-enter EV market with rebadged Nissan LEAF, targeting launch in summer 2026.

  • Mitsubishi’s new EV will likely share platform and features with the 2026 Nissan LEAF

  • Expected range up to 488 km, fast charging in 35 minutes using NACS compatibility

  • Launch aligns with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance strategy for shared EV development.

Mitsubishi plans to introduce a new electric vehicle in summer 2026. Based on the limited information provided, we’re expecting it to be a rebadged version of the new third-generation Nissan LEAF.

The new vehicle aligns with Mitsubishi’s ongoing collaboration with Nissan, which recently launched a rebadged Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV under the Nissan Rogue PHEV nameplate. The upcoming Mitsubishi EV would continue this strategy, leveraging Nissan’s EV development to quickly expand Mitsubishi’s electric portfolio.

If based on the newly redesigned LEAF, the Mitsubishi model could offer up to 488 kilometres of estimated range and support DC fast charging from 10 to 80 % in approximately 35 minutes. The LEAF uses a 75-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery and a 214-horsepower electric motor, with a 52-kWh, 174-horsepower configuration expected to follow. Both could be offered, though the arrival of the smaller battery unit for the LEAF could coincide with the launch of the new Mitsubishi EV.

Cabin features may include a redesigned centre console with relocated shift controls, and a few other minor changes. Higher trims of the LEAF include dual 14.3-inch displays with integrated Google Maps, voice assistance, and app support, all of which should follow in the Mitsubishi.

Charging access could also mirror the LEAF’s compatibility with both J1772 and NACS ports, enabling use of Tesla Superchargers. In Canada, the Nissan Energy Charge Network includes more than 25,000 stations, and if Mitsubishi joins this network, public charging may be integrated through a unified platform.

Further details, including the name, pricing, and market positioning of Mitsubishi’s upcoming EV, are expected closer to launch.
