A mid-engine isn’t the only thing new about the 2020 Chevy Corvette C8. The convertible gets a rigid retractable top as well.
- First-ever Chevy Corvette with a retractable hardtop
- The Corvette’s roof takes 16 secondes to operate
- The roof can operate up to 50 km/h or 30 mph
- The C8 Chevy Corvette Convertible will cost $7,500 more than the Coupe
- It hits 60 mph in less than 3.0 seconds
The new Chevy Corvette C8 rocked the world with incredible performance and unbeatable value back in July when the mid-engine 2020 Corvette coupe was unveiled. Today, Chevrolet unveiled the convertible version which for the first time ever features a retractable hardtop.
Unveiled at the Kennedy Space Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida, the new Corvette convertible will offer the same mind-bending performance as the coupe, but with a clear line of sound between the exhaust and the driver’s ear. Should it rain, the first retractable hardtop in a Corvette can dance back into place in 16 seconds.
The convertible roof won’t be the only that’s fast about the C8 Chevy Corvette Convertible. The 6.2-litre V8 mounted behind the driver delivers 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The convertible top is powered by six electric motors and folds into the cargo area when not in use. No word yet on the effect on cargo capacity nor do we know how much the setup weighs. Chevrolet says the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the convertible is the same as the coupe.
Chevrolet has said in the past that the new C8 Corvette was designed as a convertible. The new retractable rooftop will be available in body color or in a special Carbon Flash metallic finish. There’s a rear power window as well to reduce air circulation and improve quietness when the top is down.
