New Nissan Z Proto Has a Stick: This Time We’re Sure

Nissan Z teaser shows manual shifter, rev-match button

  • Sounds like a six, looks like a Z in latest teaser

  • Is that a seventh gear notch we spy?

We already expected it, but the latest teaser for the Nissan Z Proto proves that the car is going to have a manual transmission. Which of course leaves questions as to if the production Nissan 400Z will, but that’s a story for another day.

The Nissan Z Proto is the concept car of the upcoming next-generation Z-car. The seventh generation of the sports car that’s been sold since way back when Nissans were badged Datsuns in our market. The current 370Zed has been on sale since 2009, so we’re happy to see a new one coming along.

It’s not the only sports coupe on the block, as Toyota’s Supra has also just returned, but it does offer one thing that most of the competition doesn’t: the manual gearbox shown clearly in the latest trailer. There is a dwindling number of manual-box cars left on the market and it seems like most of them are in two-seat sports cars. Which suits us just fine.

Look closely at the few moments of gearlever we can see and there might be another clue. We think we see a double-H pattern icon on the top of the shift knob, with reverse gear down and to the right and the faintest glimpse of a seventh-speed’s line above it.

Of course that might be wishful thinking, but what isn’t is the button to the right of the shift boot. That’s a rev-matching button for automatic blipping of shifts, though it is a bit far away from the driver.

We also see Z-logo door sills, hear the click of the shifter and the sound of the car’s V6, likely a development of the current 3.7L version. And to top it off, another look at the car’s side profile with a few more details revealed. As far as the full reveal of the Z Proto, that’ll happen September 16th.
