Porsche continues to deliver what the fans and buyers want. The new 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 are absolute proof of this.
So many carmakers miss an opportunity when it comes to reviving a product line or re-introducing a specific spec, but not Porsche. The fear, the pointless concern, was that in launching the GT4 and Spyder versions of the not completely turbocharged 718, Porsche was going to stick to boosted 4-cylinder engines. The 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 are not.
Because Porsche has a sixth and possible seventh sense about the automotive world, they’ve gone and developed a new 992-based H6 naturally aspirated 4.0-litre 6-cylinder boxer engines with the sole purpose of generating all the fizz with driving-enthusiasts and Porsche fanatics all over the globe. Also, it revs to 8,000 rpm.
This new mill generates 414-horsepower (29 more for the GT4 and 39 more for the Spyder) and 309 lb.-ft. at between 5,000 and 6,800 rpm. Both the Spyder and the GT4 accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and hit 300 km/h. And we’ve only just begun.
The ONLY transmission available is a 6-speed manual transmission. We think we should all chip in and send Porsche a nice bouquet of flowers with the caption: “From all the drivers, thank you.”
In the past, true high-performance drivers had to settle for the fixed roof of the GT4 in order to benefit for the full-on GT chassis setup. Not so with the new cars as both the Spyder and GT4 share the same suspension configuration including the Porsche Active Suspension Management damping system which lowers the car’s ride height 30 mm. the cars also benefit from Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear locking differential and massive brakes which can optionally be replaced with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB).
Both the new Porsche 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 get a slew of aerodynamic add-ons which are in part responsible for the Spyder’s 301 km/h and the GT4 304 km/h top speeds. While the GT4’s is all fixed, the Spyder’s rear spoiler rises automatically at 120 km/h.
These two cars may very well be the ultimate and perhaps final examples of their kind.
Canadian pricing starts at $110,500 for the Spyder and $113,800 for the Cayman GT4. They are available for order now.
