The new Subaru WRX STI generation will arrive at the end of 2020 according to reports.
There’s been no confirmation from Subaru, but reports suggest we will see a new Subaru WRX STI by the end of 2020 along with a new WRX and the Subaru Levorg station wagon as well. For now, all we have to go on is a report out of Japanese website BestCarWeb which is in Japanese, but it’s enough to get everyone excited.
The site doesn’t name a source, but says the new WRX STI will be underpinned by the Subaru Global Platform on which the current new-generation Subaru Impreza is built. The site also says that the engine in the WRX will downsize from the current 2.0-litre turbo to a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which will produce around 270 horsepower in the current model.
The new Subaru WRX STI will still be powered by a 2.0-litre engine with power said to increase from 310 horsepower to 320 hp. Like in the current WRX STI (and thank you, Subaru), only a six-speed manual will be available in the STI. The WRX will only offer a continuously variable automatic gearbox.
Last but not least is the Subaru Levorg wagon which we don’t expect to see here, but our fingers are crossed. It will use a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine according to the same site.
This may all be fluff and speculation, but the fact of the matter is that the new Impreza is going on two years and is need of a new WRX STI to join the family. If BestCarWeb is right, we will see concepts of all three new models at the upcoming Tokyo Auto Show in Octobre.
