BMW M4 Electric (ZA2) to launch after 2028 as a standalone EV without a combustion variant.
Built on Neue Klasse platform, sharing battery and drivetrain systems with the M3 Electric.
Futuristic design expected, with more details on BMW’s EV plans coming in 2025.
BMW M has hinted at plans to introduce the first-ever electric M4 Coupe, codenamed ZA2, after 2028. The new model will mark a departure from its internal combustion engine predecessors.
The M4 Electric will not have a combustion-engine counterpart, which distinguishes it from the upcoming M3 Electric (ZA0). The latter will also be offered with a gasoline-powered option under the codename G84.

The M4 Electric will share BMW’s Neue Klasse platform with the NA2 BMW i4, which is expected to be released in 2028. Unlike earlier M4 models, the ZA2 will not be based on an internal combustion production-series donor vehicle.
The car is expected to incorporate the same battery technology, motors, and advanced computing systems as the M3 Electric. A key feature will be BMW’s “Heart of Joy” supercomputer, which integrates powertrain and driving dynamics management into a unified platform.
Performance details are not disclosed, but the M3 Electric is rumoured to generate around 700 horsepower, providing insight into the potential output of the M4 Electric. Speculation regarding a 1,340-horsepower variant remains unconfirmed, although BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture can support such high-performance configurations.
The M4 Electric is also anticipated to launch a bold new design direction. It will move away from the traditional internal combustion aesthetic, which may or may not be a blessing. BMW is expected to emphasize minimalism and futuristic styling for the M4 Electric, targeting a new generation of buyers.
Further details about BMW’s electric M lineup are expected in 2025 as the company continues to expand its EV portfolio.
