Next Generation Toyota 86 And Subaru BRZ Is Safe And Sound

Toyota and Subaru had some good news for those of us who like to drive. The 86 and the BRZ are coming back.

Driving purists will be the first to jump for joy as both a new Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ have been green-lighted. We’ve yet to return to the ground.

There’s a very real threat to sports cars afoot and that’s emission regulations. While these rules are a good thing, sports cars are generally frowned upon and considered as part of the reason why glaciers are receding. Given that these smile-inducing products represent but a fraction of a fraction of all new car sales, it’s good to see that they will be around for a little longer.

Back in January, we reported that the end of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 was rumoured. We were so saddened by this possibility that we promptly booked a 2019 Toyota 86 for a week-long winter test drive – and we thoroughly loved every second.

But now, following an interview with Matt Harrison, European Toyota marketing boss, Autocar has reported that the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ are alive and well! The reason for the fear of the demise of the lightweight, RWD, 2+2 coupe was the arrival of the hot new 2020 Toyota Supra. With the possible arrival of a “base” turbocharged 4-cylinder version, was there to be enough room for the 86?

According to Harrison, the Toyota 86 has been “a successful ‘halo’ product for us.” The “Supra is not to replace that car. They are for different audiences and are different products. We see a situation where they will sit alongside each other.”

Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, has made it clear that he intends to build and sell a number of performance cars thanks in large part to Toyota’s GR line of products. This gives us hope that there might still be room for the return of an MR2 or a Celica in Toyota’s not too distant future.

Question now is what powertrain will motivate the next BRZ and 86? It will surely be a Subaru Boxer unit but will the companies finally give in and supply fanatics with more power? We’ll let you know when we find out more.
